A type of spur gear, pinion meshes with toothed bar or rod having larger radius of curvature. The racks and pinions are available in diametrical and metric module pitches and easily switch between rotary and linear motion. This is done as the rack is a flat toothed part and the pinion being a gear. The rack moves on the turning of pinion and the desired speed can be obtained according to the diameter used.
